The World from the Eyes of an Only Child

THE CHOICETAKERS - When you are no longer given the right of choice.
Being the only child is a huge responsibility. Everybody suddenly decides that they know what is best for you because, well, it is just you. and there is no second chance to amend the mistakes of one bad child like there is in a family with two or more kids.
I just graduated from college where I majored in communication and it seems to me that everyone is suddenly attempting to take the pen off my hands to write their own version of what and who I should be. "Go get your masters in a science related field, that is where the money is", "Communication is for Americans, someone with an accent like yours can't go very far here", "I advise you switch to something more lucrative", all these wanna-be-biographers of my life suddenly emerging to give their own version of who and what they want me to be and as the only child, the weight is doubled because One, you have no one to share your reservations with; Two, you are expected to get one shot at success because "HEY! IT IS JUST YOU".
Being the only child is a full-time job. Everybody expects you to be either spoiled, perfect or servile. I choose to be neither. I would rather be capable of making my own choices and bear the consequences or rewards of those choices. I was made alone for a reason and I am darn sure one of them isn't being someone's project.
